Middle sections are hard. You can have a really solid beginning and a bang-up vision for the ending, but making the two reach toward each other for a good bridge is not really a cakewalk. The way I'm trying to make this happen at present is making a list of things that need to happen: this theme needs to be established, this character needs to meet this character, this inexplicable event needs to be planted so we recognize it in the final showdown. Stringing it all together in a compelling sequence... that's going to be fun.
I still haven't decided whether it's helpful or not that I have a first draft (a panic draft, really) to cherrypick from -- I am essentially rebuilding the whole story from scratch, and on a tight schedule. That's exciting, on the one hand -- it's really taught me the vital importance of having an outline in place first -- but on the other... dear lord, I have how many days to have this ready, and it's only a third of the way through?
Still. If not for the last minute, nothing would get done. And where's the fun in being timely and organized, right?
